마리안 반체스는 1983년부터 10년간 Hartley & Marks, Publisher의 식자공으로 견습하였고 이후 1994년부터 2003년까지 벤쿠버에 있는 Digitopolis Media Corporation을 공동 운영하였다. 2004년부터는 그녀의 타이포그라픽 일러스트레이션, 패턴, 오너먼트, 디자인 등으로 알려지기 시작하였다.

그녀의 주요 클라이언트로는 Pentagram (Michael Bierut), Stefan Sagmeister, Saks Fifth Avenue, Winterhouse (Bill Drenttel & Jessica Helfand), Bruce Mau Design, Young & Rubicam Chicago, Houghton Mifflin, Print Magazine, Wallpaper, wired, The Guardian, The New York Times 등이 있다.

마리안의 작업은 전 세계의 디자인 잡지와 서적에서 다루어졌는데, 2008년 7월 총 120페이지에 2개 국어로 그녀의 작업을 다룬 책이 Pyramyd에서 출판되었다. 그리고 5개의 작업이 Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum에 영구 소장 되었다. 2010년 10월에는 직접 집필한 책 'I Wonder'가 Thames & Hudson과 Monacelli에 의해 출판되었다.

그녀는 2010년 2월 TED 강연을 포함, 세계의 많은 콘퍼런스와 여러 대학 및 디자인 기관에서 자신의 작업에 대해 이야기를 나눴다. 그녀는 디자인 글쓰기로도 유명한데, 2004년부터 2007년까지 웹 블로그 Speak Up에 정기적으로 글을 기고했을뿐 아니라 Eye Magazine, Craft Magazine, the Vancouver Review, AGIA 등에 글을 쓰기도 하였다.

2009년까지 The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC)의 멤버였으며 2003~2006년에는 이사직을 역임하였다.

 

Marian was apprenticed as a book typesetter while working for Hartley & Marks, Publishers from 1983-1993. From 1994-2003 she co-owned the design firm Digitopolis Media Corporation, in Vancouver, BC. Since 2004 she has become widely known for her typographic illustration, patterning, ornament and design.
Her clients include Pentagram (Michael Bierut), Stefan Sagmeister, Saks Fifth Avenue, Winterhouse (Bill Drenttel & Jessica Helfand), Bruce Mau Design, Young & Rubicam Chicago, Houghton Mifflin, Print Magazine, Wallpaper*, wired, The Guardian, and The New York Times, among others from Europe, Australia and South America.

Her work has been featured in design magazines and books from around the world, and in July 2008 a 120 page, bilingual book of Marian’s work was published by Pyramyd (France), as part of the design&designer series. Five of her pieces have been collected for the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum (New York). In October 2010 her first self-authored book, I Wonder, was published by Thames & Hudson in the UK, and Monacelli in North America.

Marian has spoken about her work at many conferences worldwide, including the prestigious TED conference in February, 2010. She also frequently visits various colleges and design organizations to speak about her work, and has judged for various awards shows. She is also known for her design writing. She was a regular author for the weblog Speak Up from 2004 to 2007, and has also written for Eye Magazine, Craft Magazine, the Vancouver Review, and for the AIGA.

She was a professional member of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), and served as a board member (VP Communications) from 2003-2006, until her resignation from the GDC membership in 2009.
